'Altar' - Photographic work by Ling Yuen

'Altar' is the current series of photographic works by Ling Yuen. This body of work employs photography to examine contemporary ideas of hybridism and transculturation, that are deeply interwoven and imbedded in our haunting spaces of memory, history and family.

Ling Yuen was born in Vancouver and raised in Sydney, yet her ‘cultural’ language growing up in the Sydney suburbs was a strange fusion of Cantonese, Fijian and Hindi traditions and associations. This was the cultural baggage she carried as a young adult traversing the globe, always undefined and somewhere outside of the box.

Having returned to Sydney after a decade living and exhibiting in Geneva and Montreal her art practice is now concerned with the complex and entangling narratives of identity and cultural representation in today’s increasingly transient and shifting global societies.
